this might not fall under the category of good parenting, but at least a switch wasn't involved.

after somewhere in the neighborhood of four interrupted hours of trying to get oliver to make his bed (and remove the pencil markings he decided to make on the walls when he apparently went insane), i was standing at the all-too-familiar abyss of really bad parenting. he was tossed onto his bed at this point and i took a break from going crazy just before i started pencilling the walls and i stared him in the eyes for a couple of minutes, trying to figure out what the hell to do that wouldn't cause CPS to knock on my door or cost him thousands of dollars in future therapy.

i walked away and stopped in his doorway with the door half-closed and called brian. who, as usual, did not answer. i did not let this stop me.

i had a pretend conversation whereby i explained how oliver was unwilling to complete his tasks and improve his behavior and that he was unfit for traveling to grandma's for thanksgiving and who on earth would we have come stay with him while we went to grandma's. he finally paid attention enough to hear me and started hollering and i wandered on over to my bedroom door to continue the conversation and then hung up and walked back to the other room.

he figured out how to make his bed pretty quickly.

now for the pencil markings...
